Kitchen Remodeling With Stainless Steel Sinks

The sink is among the major points considered when drafting an efficient kitchen remodeling layout. Aside from the functionality that sinks add to kitchens, it also pays to make the most frequented area of your home as visually attractive as possible. When it comes to shopping options, stainless steel sinks are becoming a favorite. And this article discusses the essentials to choosing stainless sinks for kitchen remodeling. First off, why is stainless steel sinks a popular choice for many homeowners? Here are various reasons why it would be a great addition to your kitchen remodeling project:

  1. Wide availability- can easily be found and bought online or at your local home improvement shop.
  2. Affordable.
  3. Does not cheap or break and is durable enough to withstand many practical years of use and abuse.
  4. Come in different depths and sizes to match different renovation requirements.
  5. Versatility- complements well with a wide range of kitchen designs and color schemes.

The Basics Various elements have been combined or alloyed to manufacture stainless steel sinks with nickel and chromium as the two important ingredients that enhance their quality. The higher the concentration of these two, the more durable the manufactured sink will be. And because of the rugged nature of their functions, prone to banging and always exposed to dirt, stain, and water; quality should be ensured to prevent corrosion and unexpected replacements. When shopping for the right sink for your kitchen remodeling, here are factors to consider:

  • Mount

There are two types of stainless steel sinks that are characterized by the way they are mounted- in top mount or under mount designs. A top mount sink (also called drop-in or self-rimming sinks) has a visible rim that anchors the sink around the hole in the counter. This style not only creates a visually interesting touch to the décor but also adds stability, holding the feature in place. An under mount sink, on the other hand, has a rim that goes under the counter seamlessly. This design allows for a cleaner look and prevents food particles and dirt from getting in between the counter and sink.

  • Gauge

The gauges that stainless steel sinks come in refer to the thickness of the material and as a rule of thumb, the thicker the better. Gauges range from 16 to 22 gauge, with 16 as the thickest. Aside from being more resistant to dents, a sink with better gauge is less noisy and offers better insulation.

  • Sink Basin

Stainless steel sinks are engineered differently to meet specific kitchen remodeling requirements. There are single and double basins that feature different depth, sizes and styles. For homeowners working on smaller kitchens, a one-basin sink that is deep would suffice. For families who have enough room and cook often, a two-basin sink would be a more ideal choice. These also come in various finishes so if you think stainless steel is too industrial looking, you can choose satin or other textured finishes.

Tips for a Successful Kitchen Renovation

It is a well-known fact that the kitchen and the bathroom are the most expensive rooms in the house, so a bit of research and planning ahead of your renovation will help to keep costs and stresses down, and have the project go as smoothly as possible.

    1. Budget. As with any project to be undertaken, the first thing you need to do is fix your budget, and please, please, please remember to allow for overruns - you do not known what will be found in the walls or the floor that will result in additional costs to the project.
    2. Layout. Does the existing layout work for you? Are you taking out any walls to make a bigger space, or adding windows or doors? These kinds of changes need to be taken into account when considering the layout of the kitchen. Remember the triangle between sink, stove and fridge!
    3. Electrical Outlets. A very common problem in a kitchen is an insufficient number of electrical outlets, particularly at countertop level. If your large appliances are all to be built-in, each will need a dedicated outlet. How much countertop space will you have? Do you have small appliances that live on the counter like a coffee machine, toaster or toaster oven? Do you have other appliances that live in a cupboard and are used only occasionally? Additional outlets should be provided to accommodate these appliances.
    4. Countertop. There are numerous choices for the countertop, from tiles to granite or polished stone, to concrete, stainless steel and various molded surfaces. And the price range is equally huge, with unique custom-made surfaces costing thousands of dollars. Be careful that you don't overspend on the finishes as you might not get it back on reselling your property. Also think about wear and tear on the counter - do you have kids? Might there be frequent spillages that might cause staining?
    5. Cabinets. The choice of finishes for your cabinets is limitless, from natural wood to laminates, stainless steel, glass, synthetic finishes and various combinations of them all. Do you wish your upper level cabinets to go right up to the ceiling - the advantages of this include more storage space though high up, no dust can collect on the top of the cupboards, plus it gives the illusion of a higher ceiling, which is particularly good if your ceiling is a little low.
    6. Floor. Are you installing a new floor covering? If yes, it needs to be something that is very durable to withstand the wear and tear of traffic in the busiest room in your house! Hardwood, tile, stone or even polished concrete fill this role effectively and efficiently.
    7. Appliances. The kitchen is often described as the "heart of the home", so you don't want to skimp on appliances. Stainless steel is more expensive but it will last longer. Having appliances that match is also very important to the overall look of the finished kitchen. Do you want a dishwasher and where do you want it to be located? Do you want a built-in microwave or wine cooler, and where should they be located. Now is the time to think about these things.

There you have it. Lots to think about before your project gets started, but planning ahead will more than pay for itself in the successful completion of the project.

Organize a Kitchen Efficiently

Organizing a kitchen efficiently can be done much easier than some people think. It can seem like a bit of a challenge when you look at cupboards packed with unorganized goods. Or your drawers are packed with what seems like too much clutter. All it takes is a small bit of planning and with a little investment you can make the job of having an organized kitchen for life much easier.

Efficiency is the focus of this articles and it means time saving and quickness. To save time in the kitchen the easiest way to do that is know where all your accessories are through good storage. Once you know where everything's place is your time spent preparing in the kitchen will be cut dramatically. This leaves you do spend less time cooking or more time to do what you love (depending on how you look on it).

So what are the major areas that we can organize in the kitchen? The answer is drawers, cupboards, herbs and spices and cooking equipment. These areas if left unsorted, without order, cause such an unnecessary backlog of time spend preparing or fumbling around.

Cupboards can be mayhem to navigate and so what we suggest to keep them orderly is to firstly fit storage trays and racks into the inside of cupboard doors. This is really helpful for the storage of spices and dried herbs which traditionally are hard to stack without them tumbling everywhere. It also frees up space for bulkier items that can be stacked and organized more easily. You don't need to stop there though you can get "pull outs" which are racks inserted into the cupboard that pull out. What this does is save you having to take out every item in the cupboard to reach something at the back. You can simply pull out the fitted rack and reach the item(s) easily.

If you are a cook that loves using many utensils you will know that it can be a bit of a puzzle finding the right tool at the right time. This can be made much easier with drawer inserts which are separated into sections. Then you are working efficiently knowing exactly where your utensils are so they can be accessed instantly without delay.

As for cooking equipment, we all know that rarely used but important equipment can take up valuable space on kitchen counters. A good way to deal with this issue is to use a lift to store items under the main counter and bring it up to surface level quickly when it is needed. They are such useful additions to kitchens and really help to provide space for preparation and cooking. A good example of use is mixer lifts, mixers are used often enough to have one but not often enough to have it permanently on your work station. Lifts save cupboard space as if you have something like a mixer in your cupboard you don't have space for much else.
